    How to Play — Ninety‑Nine

    • Three players: You, L (left), and R (right).
    • Each round: total starts at 0, use a 52‑card deck. Everyone has 3 cards.
    • On your turn, play a card upright next to the pile, then draw a replacement.
    • Goal: keep the total ≤ 99. If you cannot, you lose a nugget to the pot.
    • Card values: 2–3, 5–8 add pip value; J/Q/K = 10; A = 1 or 11; 9 = hold (no change); 4 = reverse play (no change); 10 = −10 (totals can go negative in this variant); Black K = set total to 99.
    • Order is clockwise unless reversed by a 4. After a loss, play continues from the next player.

    Detailed Guide — Ninety‑Nine

Objective: Keep the running total at or under 99 while outlasting the two computer players (L and R). You each start with 3 gold nuggets; busting (>99) costs a nugget.

    Cards and Effects

    • 2–3, 5–8: add pip value to the total
    • J, Q, K (red): +10
    • Ace: +1 or +11 (you choose on your turn)
    • 9: hold (no change to total)
    • 4: reverse direction (no change to total)
    • 10: −10 (totals can go below 0)
    • Black King (♠ or ♣): set total to 99

    Turn Flow

    1. Play one card to the table and state the new total.
    2. Draw a new card from the draw pile to keep 3 in hand.
    3. Direction is clockwise unless reversed by a 4.

    When You Bust

If you cannot play without exceeding 99, you lose one nugget to the pot. A fresh round begins immediately (new deck, total resets to 0), starting with the next player in the current direction.

    Learning Aids

    • The equation line shows the math (e.g., 87 + 10 = 97).
    • Aces prompt you to choose 1 or 11, then enter the total.
    • Special cards are annotated to reinforce their effects.

    Winning

    • Everyone starts with 3 gold nuggets.
    • If a player cannot play without exceeding 99, they lose one nugget and a fresh round begins with the next player.
    • At 0 nuggets, a player is eliminated.
    • If you are the last player with nuggets, you win and are celebrated!
    • If you lose all your nuggets, the game ends with a “better luck next time” message.
